Stress: The Ultimate Challenge & How You Can Win

Written by: Jennifer Hope, Fitness Nutrition Coach, Soul PhysiQ

Many Americans live very busy lifestyles and are consistently pressured by stress. Stress from work, relationships, responsibilities, health, seeps into our everyday lives and may cause anxiety, mood imbalance, fatigue, poor concentration, problems sleeping, and inconsistent performance. Stress is also a main contributor in holding onto that undesirable fat we successively strive to lose.Nutrition for Stress

As a Holistic Fitness and Nutrition Coach, I guide my clients to balance their lifestyle with their health goals by incorporating neuro-associative conditioning (NAC). I believe the results we desire, can be achieved faster with lifelong results; when we focus our attention inward. Physical results then seem to occur naturally.

By focus within, I’m not singularly targeting the mind-body connection. We also need to acknowledge what specific foods and nutrients are being ingested in your body. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “you are what you eat.” As I highly agree with that, I also emphasize assisting your body in receiving all of its’ nutrient needs. Depending on your activity, social environment and lifestyle; you may require more nutrients to effectively balance your body. Most times, foods supply sufficient vitamins and minerals, but may not offer enough of what your body requires. When working with a client, I raise awareness to the benefits of incorporating supplemental nutrition. A simple addition of even one supplement, can create immediate and lasting results to one’s achievable goal. While many people get discouraged because, “they’ve tried everything”, they often overlook what may just be a simple nutrient deficiency. Stress on the body is often your body telling you, it’s needing more or less of any component; this may be the key link that is creating the block between you and your ideal physique.

For example, a stressful environment will cause your body’s nervous system to be over- responsive to stress, increase cortisol levels, and naturally, store fat.

Taurine, is an organic sulfur- containing amino acid, essential in the metabolization of fats. Taurine works to lower cortisol levels, which result to managing stress and anxiety. Many benefits derive from supplementing your nutrition program with taurine. It’s shown to improve athletic performance, focus, support insulin health [may prevent diabetes], elevate energy levels [you'll find it in most energy drinks, except loaded with sugar], lower blood pressure, detoxify the body, calm inflammation, and aids as a dynamic brain nutrient.

The effects of Taurine are many, the key to acknowledge, is that getting an adequate amount (2-6g.) will help lower stress; which will help improve body composition and weight loss. Complementing Taurine with B vitamins and Omega 3 fats will also better assist taurine absorption and allow for faster results.

Note: Always consult with a doctor prior to adding any supplement or therapy into your lifestyle; as a precaution to current health status.
